Aludium publishes its 2019 Sustainability Report

Sustainability is the heart of our business’ is the title of Aludium’s third annual sustainability publication, which highlights, among other key aspects, that employee safety is the company’s top priority and that its goal is to build the most efficient recycling circuit for aluminum

Aludium has just launched its sustainability report for 2019. In this publication, it is emphasized that sustainability is the heart of Aludium and that it is at the center of its business strategy. Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium, states that the greatest commitment of Aludium is the safety and care of its employees at all levels. This commitment has been materialized this year in the Health and Safety policy as “it has been key to minimize the effects of the pandemic on employees, customers and our business,” adds Mario Allet, director of R&D of Aludium.

“We can only be satisfied with our leadership if every employee, visitor and contractor returns home safely at the end of each day. Aludium’s accident record rate (TRR), compared to other companies in the sector, is at a low level, and our goal is to reach Zero Accidents,” says Lionel Chapis.

2019, a strategic year

During the years 2017 and 2018, Aludium invested more than 30 million euros to increase its aluminum recycling capacity in the plants of Amorebieta and Alicante. In 2019, the main challenge for the organization has been to implement this strategy.

Between 2017 and 2021, the percentage of recycled aluminum used by Aludium will grow by approximately 40%. Not only will Aludium increase the percentage of recycled aluminum used, but it will also increase the capacity to recycle lower quality aluminum. “This is a strategic change for the company and is aligned with the new Action Plan for the Circular Economy published by the European Commission. The increase in recycled material gives Aludium a unique opportunity to optimize costs, better control our supply chain and significantly reduce our CO2 footprint. Our goal is to build the most efficient recycling circuit for aluminum,” says the Lionel Chapis.

“Sustainability at Aludium is not only seen in the sustainability report but it is also reflected in the day to day and in our way of doing things,” says Mario Allet. In the environmental field, “our investments and process improvements are aimed at reducing our environmental footprint to protect the planet, people’s health and mitigate the effects of climate change,” adds Mario Allet.

ASI Certification

In line with the above and as a commitment to transparency, in addition to having ISO 14000, ISO 18000, ISO 50000 and Ecovadis certification, the report states that the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) obtained certification in its Performance Standard last December 2019.

The certification guarantees that the products of Aludium manufactured in Alicante and Amorebieta have been elaborated in conformity with this ASI standard, in each step of the supply chain. “The ASI certification represents the culmination of a great deal of work and effort by the entire Aludium team. It is a commitment and responsibility throughout our value chain that we have acquired to maintain the highest standards of quality,” concludes Lionel Chapis.

ASI’s standards are among the most rigorous of all material certification programs and cover all aspects of aluminum production, from raw materials to recycling. The standards also cover business practices and human rights, as well as materials management for intermediate users of aluminum.
