Since the 1960s Aludium has been a leading supplier of lithographic grade aluminium, a tradition which continues with today’s modern printing industry. Aludium’s lithographic grades are compatible with advanced plate manufacturing techniques such as computer-to-plate (CTP) and waterless lithography. Our aluminium meets the highest requirements for surface quality, exceptional flatness, and excellent electro-graining response.

Aludium offers two main lithographic alloys, which are available as coils:

  • 1050 for standard printing applications
  • 1020 which offers higher resistance, ideal for long print runs. This patented alloy was developed by our own Cindal R&D centre to meet the specific needs of the printing industry.

The fast-speed finishing line at Aludium Alicante was completely overhauled in 2012 to guarantee the accurate gauge, shape, flatness, and surface quality of our lithographic aluminium. During cold rolling, precision tolerances are maintained using an X-ray gauge control at both entry and exit. Aludium guarantees the uniformity of the final thickness – a key property which is critical to minimising plate wear and ensuring consistent ink transfer.

Aludium’s lithographic grades are supplied with a fully cleaned surface which is free of oil, contamination, and oxides from the aluminium manufacturing process. Our cleaning line uses a hot electrochemical process which provides a perfectly clean and pre-activated surface free of oxides. This produces a better graining response and uses less power during printing.

Products which are destined to be grained are inspected with an inbuilt, artificial vision system. This enables Aludium to certify that each coil has a uniform appearance and is free of defects that would adversely impact the printing process.

Aludium’s manufacturing teams work closely with our Cindal R&D centre to develop the processes and alloys that are used to make our lithographic grades. This expertise has led to the wide acceptance of our lithographic grades by the European printing industry.
