- The PPA, set to commence on July 1, 2024, will cover more than one third of Aludium’s annual consumption with renewable energy
- In recent years, Aludium has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability, boosted by an experienced team and a diverse and eco-friendly product portfolio. The agreement marks a significant step in its journey to accelerate the decarbonization of its industrial activities and achieve complete integration of renewable, clean, and competitive energy sourcing
December 14, 2023. Aludium, a leading company in the manufacturing of aluminum rolled products across various global markets, operating in three European plants, has entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Norwegian company Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy generator. This agreement has been signed within the framework of the relationship between Statkraft and Fortia Energía, the largest independent supplier in the Iberian electricity market. The contract, valid for 10 years, will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
Thanks to this strategic alliance, Aludium will secure more than a third of its annual electricity consumption with renewable energy. Reducing the total carbon emissions intensity to less than 4.5 t CO2/t Al (cradle-to-gate), using renewable energy for electricity supply, creating certified low-carbon emission products, increasing the recycling of aluminum scrap, and maintaining the highest industry standards in environmental management certifications are some of the sustainability goals set for 2025 to drive the climate transition.
The agreement represents a significant step in accelerating the decarbonization of its industrial activities and promoting renewable and clean electricity within the company. “With the signing of this agreement, we are taking a significant step towards achieving our goal of having an electricity consumption based solely on renewable energy. This marks a notable milestone in our roadmap to meet the sustainability objectives set for 2025” says Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium. “The company’s action to combat climate change involves accelerating the pace, as part of the solution, toward a transition to clean energy that transforms the planet into a more sustainable, healthy, and resilient place for present and future generations,” concludes the CEO.
Tiago Thomaz, Head of Origination Iberia at Statkraft, has remarked that “this agreement is further proof of how Statkraft is a key partner for heavy industry, accompanying them on their path to decarbonisation and making it possible for them to continue to generate employment and welfare in a sustainable way. A net zero future won´t be possible if the industry is not part of it, as Aludium is doing”.
In words of Juan Temboury, General Manager of Fortia Energía, “This agreement aims at reducing emissions and diversifying supply sources and are key to reduce the uncertainty faced by generators and consumers in the electricity market. The long-term partnership established with Statkraft since 2018 shows the commitment of Fortia Energía to play a key role in the path towards energy transition and the decarbonization of industrials.”
