Aludium encourages sustainable consumption and recycling among its employees on World Recycling Day

May 17, 2022. An Indian proverb says that “the land is not an inheritance for our parents but a loan from our children.” The promotion of sustainability in Aludium’s work spaces is part of the company’s responsibility with all its stakeholders. Today, May 17, World Recycling Day is celebrated in order to raise awareness in society about the importance of treating waste properly and Aludium wanted to share with its employees its commitment to promoting recycling and more responsible consumption through various actions within the recycling and circular economy awareness campaign called ‘Close the loop!’

“The company’s ambition for sustainability does not only apply to Aludium’s production model with aluminum recycling. The importance of recycling and establishing a circular model, as well as sustainable habits, extends to all areas of the company. The current waste crisis aggravates the climate and biodiversity crisis, and it is critical that all citizens become aware and act to reduce the generation of waste, extend its useful life and recycle it correctly and effectively”, says Joaquim Vaz, VP of Human Resources & EHS Aludium.

This action is part of the sustainability strategy presented last February by Aludium with the slogan: ‘Accelerating the transition towards a business model with low carbon emissions’. Specifically, in the People and Community axis and within ‘promote recycling in our communities’ and ‘Aludium’s sustainability leadership programs’.

The environment’s favorite 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle

The central message of the ‘Close the loop!’ campaign has been the rule of the three Rs: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. Reduce the amount of garbage, Reuse all materials that can be reused to extend their useful life and Recycle giving other uses to objects and materials. “That the waste ends up in recycling plants to obtain new materials and reduce incineration in landfills, reduce CO2 emissions and the consumption of water and energy are some of the objectives that are intended to be achieved with recycling,” says Joaquim Vaz.

‘Close the loop!’ has been presented today to all members of the company. Aludium has installed containers or clean points at the Alicante and Amorebieta plants so that the employees can separate the waste according to its type (plastic containers, cans and briks, waste or paper and cardboard or hazardous waste).

    Responsible gift

On the other hand, all employees have received a gift to raise awareness about recycling and waste management: an aluminum bottle, an infinitely recyclable material, a cup and a bag to present its campaign ‘Close the loop!’ The campaign has been very well received by the staff. “In a company that works with 100% recyclable material, it is essential to sensitise to reduce the waste we generate and to recycle in the right way. Although we think we already know everything about domestic recycling, the survey has helped us in a playful way to question small details,” says Eva María Hernández, an employee at the Alicante plant. “With the bag, the bottle and the cup, we will reduce single use consumption in everyday life,” adds Eva María.

“I love initiatives like this and the gifts are, apart from being beautiful, very useful and totally focused on the elimination of the use of plastic.  We often have doubts about how to recycle. It is important that we are reminded and taught how to do it because it is not only important to recycle, but also to do it correctly. The future is in our hands and it is time for all of us to make small gestures to change it,” says Ana Guil, Aludium employee in Alicante. The chosen corporate gifts are sustainable and environmentally friendly. In addition, in order to raise awareness about caring for the planet and adopt responsible habits such as reducing ‘rubbish’, Aludium will carry out corporate volunteering actions related to cleaning and preserving nature in the coming months, in addition to those developed in the last months.
