Accelerating the transition to a decarbonized economy and a more egalitarian society
Sustainability and innovation at the heart of our business
At Aludium we have accelerated our sustainability ambition in recent years. Commitment is shown through deeds, so at the end of 2021 we created the company’s Sustainability Committee, led by Aludium CEO Lionel Chapis. The committee consists of 7 management team members that drive across-the-board sustainability policies.
In 2022, we published Aludium’s sustainability strategy under the slogan ‘Accelerating the transition towards a low carbon emissions business model’ with the aim of growing responsibly and contributing value to all our stakeholders.
Our sustainability framework summarizes our commitments, structured around two main pillars linked to our business: ‘Climate Transition’ and ‘People and Community’. In line with this approach, we have established nine clear sustainability objectives set for 2025. Six of them are part of Climate Transition and three fall under People and Community.
Aludium has a 60+ year history in our communities and a solid track record of sustainability leadership.
At Aludium, we are working to contribute to the 2030 Agenda through our determination, and our strategy is aligned with the Paris Agreement and the European Circular Economy Action Plan.
Collectively accelerating the change for a sustainable future
Strategic Pillars
Climate Transition
MOVING TOWARDS ‘NET ZERO’ THROUGH A CIRCULAR MODEL
70% of Aludium’s metals come from aluminum recycling; this is one of our business’ strengths and it enables us to avoid more than 2.5 million tons of C02 emissions per year, in addition to drastically reducing the energy we use. We continue to develop actions to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and products. These achievements have been attained through investment in fusion technologies that help us process more types of scrap metal, which increases our recycling capacity, and through collaboration with clients in closed loop recycling programs.
CINDAL
Innovation and sustainability come together at CINDAL, one of the most cutting-edge innovation and research centers for aluminum in the world. Here, the limits of this metal are explored, creating solutions and sustainable products with a certified carbon footprint ‘Cradle to Gate’ from production to market, such as the ‘Aludium ECO’ product line.
Aludium ECO
Thanks to our support for recycling, we launched Aludium ECO at the end of 2022. Aludium ECO is a line of products divided into four categories: Aludium ECO 2.0, Aludium ECO 3.0, Aludium ECO 4.0 and Aludium ECO P7. All of them have a carbon footprint certified by an independent third party, from production to market. Aludium ECO’s emissions levels are calculated in accordance with the ISO-14067-1:2018 standard and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol).
People and Community
GENDER EQUALITY, SAFETY AND HEALTH, NUMBER ONE PRIORITIES
Achieving real, effective gender equality between men and women and guaranteeing maximum safety and health for our team are the company’s top social sustainability priorities. We seek performance excellence through fomenting a safety culture that is striving to reach Zero Accidents; promoting talent; and the creation of healthy, diverse, safe, motivational environments.
We promote wellbeing and inclusive growth in our communities in order to increase our positive social impact.
Diversity and inclusion
At Aludium, we firmly believe that diversity is a strength, and that fostering inclusion is not only a moral responsibility but also a strategic pillar for our long-term success. We want to ensure that every employee feels valued, respected, and supported, regardless of their origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, age, or other characteristics.
Furthermore, we are implementing our Diversity and Inclusion Policy, a significant milestone that reflects our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse work environment. This policy mirrors our commitment to building an environment where each person can thrive and contribute significantly. Diversity is not only welcomed but it aligns with our values, and we believe that embracing diversity is essential for our collective success.
Women’s Committee
Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a key element for a prosperous future. Among our 2025 sustainability targets we included “Promotion of gender equality, increasing the percentage of women in technical and management positions, to become a leading company in the sector in inclusion and gender diversity”. The most outstanding initiative for driving gender equality within Aludium and beyond, as well as increasing and giving greater visibility to the presence of women in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), is the Aludium Women’s Committee, created in 2022.
Aluminium stewardship initiative (ASI) and other certifications
Our performance excellence is backed by Aludium’s certifications in sustainability and corporate management. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is outstanding in the aluminum sector, being the most prestigious sustainability standard in the whole aluminum value chain.
Aludium has been a member of ASI since 2019, and all our plants (Alicante, Amorebieta and Castelsarrasin) currently hold both of its certifications: the ASI Performance Standard (PS) and the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC).
