Aludium launches ‘Aludium Eco’, a range of innovative products with a certified low carbon footprint

    • The new ‘Aludium Eco’ product range has an independent, third-party certified, carbon footprint of less than 4 t CO2 / t AL, from production to marketing (from ‘cradle-to-gate’) and consists of 3 product subgroups: ‘Aludium Eco 2.0’, ‘Aludium Eco 3.0’ and ‘Aludium Eco 4.0’.
    • The carbon footprint of ‘Aludium Eco’ is less than half that of the average of European aluminium rolled products producers, making it one of the world’s lowest carbon rolled aluminium products.
    • ‘Aludium Eco’ is designed to help customers and end users achieve their and their company’s carbon reduction targets.

24/11/2022. Aludium, a leader in manufacturing rolled aluminium products in Europe, announced today ‘Aludium Eco’, a new innovative product group with a third-party certified carbon footprint of less than 4 tons C02 /t AL, cradle-to-gate. For certain Aludium Eco products, the carbon footprint is even lower at less than 3 or even 2 tons C02 /t AL.

“Advancing the low-carbon transition is core to Aludium’s company strategy, and the development of Aludium Eco is a big step forward to offer our customers access to products certified at some of the world’s lowest levels of carbon footprint for aluminium flat rolled products. This is the fruit of years of investment in our assets, technology, and processes aiming to reduce our carbon footprint and develop sophisticated tracking to enable this transparency for our customers.” reveals Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium. Aludium Eco captures total emissions of the product through delivery to our customer and is externally certified. We will launch ‘Aludium Eco’ shipments with a select group of customers starting in 2023.”, adds Chapis.

Clearly Labeled and Certified Products Designed for Transparency

Daniel Jubera, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer notes that Aludium Eco’s carbon footprint is less than half that of the average of European aluminium manufacturers, which means it must be ranked as one of the world’s lowest carbon rolled aluminium products.” Aludium Eco products are labelled as either Aludium Eco 4.0, 3.0, or 2.0, designating the level of total CO2 emissions per ton AL.

“’Aludium Eco 2.0’ is, at the carbon footprint level, the most efficient since, as the name suggests, its emissions are less than 2 tons of CO2 per tonne of aluminium supplied to our customers. ‘Aludium Eco 3.0’ has an emissions level below 3 tons of CO2 for each ton supplied and ‘Aludium Eco 4.0’, below 4 tons.” says Jubera.

    Certification and methodology

Aludium Eco’s Cradle-to-Gate emission levels “are calculated in accordance with standard ISO-14067-1:2018 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standards, which are then certified by a third party”, explains Samuel Kinsman, Aludium Vice President of Strategy & Transformation.  “The ‘cradle-to-gate’ carbon footprint approach includes all emissions for a product from the beginning of the supply chain (bauxite) until its delivery to Aludium’s customers, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, so it captures the real carbon footprint embedded in the material from the entire value chain” concludes Kinsman.

Leading the transition to a low-carbon economy to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement requires designing sustainable, low-carbon products. The launch of Aludium Eco is a significant milestone for the company to achieve its recently published 2025 Sustainability TargetsToday, 70% of Aludium’s metals come from aluminium recycling, the cornerstone of its environmental sustainability strategy.

The company has set the following commitments to reduce its carbon footprint: Continue to invest in recycling capacity and efficiency, increase renewable electricity consumption to 100%, initiate productivity and energy efficiency programmes to reduce energy consumption, procure low-carbon primary metals, maintain ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative) Performance and Chain of Custody certifications at all company manufacturing sites, and encourage the use of electric vehicles among Aludium employees.
