Students of the UPV/EHU’s Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology get to know Amorebieta’s hot rolling mill

    • Aludium is committed to young talent through its extensive scholarship programme, the programme to retain and promote internal talent called ‘Aludium Talent Academy’. This also includes regular plant visits by students from universities and other vocational training centres so they can learn about the aluminium production process, to bring industrial reality closer to future engineers and other technical professionals.
    • Aludium’s drive to increase and make visible the presence of women in the industry, as well as in other posts in the organisation, responds to the fact that gender equality is one of the priorities of our social sustainability goals, as reflected in our strategy and sustainability goals set for 2025, which includes:  “Promoting gender equality by increasing the percentage of women in technical and management posts, among other proposals, to become a leading company in gender inclusion and diversity within the sector.”

30 November 2023. Last Thursday, 23 November, Aludium’s Amorebieta plant was visited by 13 students in the third year of the Degree in Industrial Technology Engineering at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, together with their lecturer. As part of our commitment to educational communities to bring genuine professional and industrial work closer to young students and exchange experiences, the Aludium plant has once again organised this educational and learning opportunity in collaboration with the university. However, based on that commitment, to attract and retain the best young talent from the communities in which we operate, the company regularly implements with local universities, other vocational training centres and technical departments, a broad and diverse scholarship programme to create quality local employment and attract the best young talent.

During the day, the university students got to learn in-depth about how the company operates and the production process involved in recycling, smelting and rolling aluminium, with special attention being paid to the Amorebieta plant’s hot rolling mill. This is the main reason why future engineers visit our facilities. The session lasted three hours during which Alfonso Martínez, director of rolling operations, delivered a talk about the aluminium transformation process. Jorge Macias, head of production of the hot rolling department, explained this essential part of the process to the students in detail.

    Promoting and retaining young talent

Following this training session, the students visited the plant to discover the production process first-hand. During this phase, Mikel Garay, a process engineer from the hot rolling department, and Olaia Bengoa, a process engineer from the cold rolling department, acted as guides for the students during their tour which allowed them to see first-hand the work and development involved in the plant’s different fields of production. During the visit, not only did they see how aluminium is processed, but also examples of young professionals with a very promising future within Aludium. Mikel and Olaia, the managers leading the visit, started in the company with a scholarship from the UPV and, currently, a talent retention programme called ‘Aludium Talent Academy’ is being implemented to search for the organisation’s future managers.

    Promoting female talent

Olaia Bengoa is one of those women who are part of the company’s female talent. Aludium’s drive to increase and make visible the presence of women in the industry, as well as in the rest of the organisation’s posts, responds to the fact that gender equality is one of the priorities of our social sustainability goals, as reflected in our strategy and sustainability goals set for 2025, which include:  “Promoting gender equality by increasing the percentage of women in technical and management posts, among other proposals, to become a leading company in gender inclusion and diversity within the sector.” Aludium believes that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but an essential pillar for implementing an egalitarian prosperous and sustainable future.

Following the visit, the students were left feeling very happy and motivated. Aludium will continue developing alliances with educational communities, allowing us not only to get closer to the next generations of engineering professionals but also to professionals from other fields.
